Are you the adventurous type looking for an SUV that can keep up with you on the off-road trails of Plymouth, Livonia, and Belleville, Michigan? Blackwell Ford has an SUV for you: the 2022 Ford Explorer. Named for the desire to experience the world around you, the Explorer can handle highways, towns, and off-roading trails.
On this page, we will introduce you to this adventure-ready SUV. This review touches on the Explorer’s engine options, off-road capability, and interior. Read on to learn about it!
Engine Options and Performance

The Explorer offers three engines, giving you the flexibility to choose the power you need.
The standard engine is a 2.3L EcoBoost® turbocharged I-4 with 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It works with the 10-speed automatic transmission, which is standard for all three engines.
The second engine option is the available 3.0L EcoBoost® twin-turbocharged V6 that gives you 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque to work with. This is the most powerful engine option of the three.
The last engine option is the 3.3L V6 Hybrid. This is a great option for drivers who prefer a hybrid engine that packs a punch. It provides 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque, slotting it neatly between the two gas engines in terms of power.
Rear-wheel drive is standard, although if you’re planning to head off-road, the available Intelligent 4-wheel drive (4WD) might be right for you.
Inside the Explorer

The interior of the Explorer seats six or seven depending on which configuration you choose. That means no one gets left behind when you head out on adventures.
The standard tri-zone electronic automatic temperature control system helps you, your co-pilot, and your second-row passengers stay comfortable by allowing three different temperature zones.
The Explorer starts with standard cloth seating, although you can enjoy available leather seating surfaces or ActiveXâ„¢ seating. Optional front-row heated seats keep you comfortable when the weather gets chilly.
The Explorer also has a fair share of tech. The available SYNC® 3 system has a 10.1-inch LCD portrait touchscreen that lets you play music, get in-vehicle voice-activated navigation, and make phone calls through this system.
Off-Road Capability

You can equip the Ford Explorer with several different features to help you tackle the terrain you encounter when off-roading.
The Explorer even has a trim level designed for off-roading specifically: the Timberline trim. You get higher ground clearance, steel underbody skid plates, and Timberline styling inside.
To help you maintain traction while driving, opt for available Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management Systemâ„¢. The Terrain Management Systemâ„¢ gives you multiple drive modes to customize your driving experience to your environment. Some of the modes are:
Trail
Deep Sand/Snow
Slippery
Tow/Haul
